About us

A family business built on 25 years of stonework

Cap and Cope was founded by a master stonemason with over a quarter of a century of hands-on experience, and it is still run as a family business.

The work ranges from simple garden walls to grand stately homes, and the approach never changes: treat old buildings with respect, do as little as is needed and do it properly.

Your property is more than stone and mortar. It's your home, your history and your investment.

We're based in Bourne, Lincolnshire, and work from Lincoln down to Cambridge, with a specialist focus on Rutland.

How we think about old buildings

I

The smallest footprint

Do as little as is needed, and keep as much of the original building as we can.

II

Match the stone

Identify what the building is made of and source the closest local match.

III

Match the mortar & finish

Lime, mixed for colour and texture, so the wall can breathe. Hand-tooled to sit with the original, so the repair reads as part of the building.

In our workshop

Carving is done by hand in the workshop, then fixed on site.

Questions

Things people ask us

That's the whole point of how we work. We identify the stone, source the closest local match, match the mortar colour and texture, and tool the face to suit the original. New stone is naturally a touch brighter at first and weathers in over time.

Like-for-like repairs often don't need consent, but anything that affects the character of a listed building can. It's always worth checking with your local authority's conservation officer before work starts. We can provide method statements and specifications to support an application.

Lime is softer and more breathable than the stone around it, so moisture escapes through the joints rather than the stone face. Hard cement mortars trap moisture and can cause soft limestone and ironstone to spall.
